Electric cars get a few perks in the Netherlands — chiefly when it comes to low-emission zones and parking at charge points. There aren’t as many eye-catching add-on signs as in Germany, but the rules are clear — and there’s a growing set of traffic signs for zero-emission vehicles.

Special traffic signs for EVs

Dutch traffic signs are generally for all vehicles — but there are a few exceptions and newer signs aimed at EVs:

Charging bays with the add-on sign "alleen tijdens laden"

"Only while charging": The most common sign at public charge points. It’s crystal clear: you may only occupy the bay while you’re actively charging. Tip: Even EVs can’t just park there — the cable must be plugged in and the session started. If you’re sitting there without charging, expect a fine — or in cities like Amsterdam, a tow.

Supplementary signs with a plug icon or text like "uitsluitend elektrische voertuigen"

("electric vehicles only"): Usually paired with a parking sign. It makes it clear that only fully electric vehicles may use the bay — plug-in hybrids are often excluded. Tip: Look closely: some signs distinguish between "emissieloos" (zero-emission) and "elektrisch" (electric) — which can make a difference.

New prohibition sign for internal combustion (C22c – Zero Emissiezone)

A round prohibition sign reading "Zone – Uitsluitend emissieloze voertuigen". This marks the new zero-emission zones rolling out in many cities from 2025. Only electric or hydrogen vehicles may enter — everyone else stays out. Note: At first this applies to commercial delivery traffic, but private cars may follow in the longer term.
